Distance and Brightness

  • NGC 514 is 83 million light years away.
  • The Milky Way is between 170,000 and 200,000 ly in diameter so a star in the field is much closer.
  • The "Milky Way Star" is less bright than the supernova.
  • It is estimated that the supernova is 5 billion times brighter than the sun!
